Conducting Investigations

T

This practical and interactive course is designed to give you an insight and understanding of how to prepare for your investigatory role, the challenges which often arise during the investigation, and the process of considering the evidence, arriving at your findings and drafting your report. The emphasis throughout will be on a practical approach to fulfilling your investigatory role with greater confidence, and there will be plenty of opportunities for discussion and to ask questions.

We will cover the types of investigation you might be asked to carry out, and explore some of the practical guidance arising from recent case law. With reference to a Case Study, we will work through the planning, implementation, decision-making and report writing stages of an investigation. There will be informal opportunities to consider and practise key skills such as listening and questioning. We will also cover how best to deal with unforeseen challenges such as delays, counter grievances and refusals to co-operate.

By the end of the training you will:

  • Understand what is required for a ‘reasonable’ investigation
  • Understand the investigator’s role and remit
  • Gain knowledge of practical guidance issued by Employment Tribunals
  • Understand the main stages of an investigation and what is required at each
  • Further develop your listening and questioning skills
  • Have greater confidence in dealing with the unexpected during the investigation process
  • Share ideas and experiences with others who may be called upon to conduct investigations
